Week 1 Verse 2
Video Transcript: We end this week with this verse:
We end this week with this verse:
Ephesians 1:3 Blessed be (eulogētos yoo-log-ay-TOS) the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who has
blessed (eulogeo) us in Christ with every spiritual (pneumatikos pnyoo-mat-ik-os) blessing
(eulogia yoo-log-ee'-ah) in the heavenly places. (epouranios ep-oo-ran'-ee-os)
In this triple blessing verse we will be looking at the words blessed and blessing. The first words are
blessed be. In some translations it is praise be. The Greek word here is eulogētos meaning blessed, praised.
It is only used when speaking of God and Christ. Yes, that means when we are blessing them. I don’t know
about you but I never thought about blessing God when I praise Him. Yet in this passage Paul is praising
God because, let’s face it, if we think about material blessings, what could we bless God with, what could we
give Him? Nothing. God needs nothing from us but He wants our praise. In this passage Paul is praising God
and Jesus for all of the blessings that are stored up for us in heaven because of Jesus.
Psalm 103:1-2 (NKJV) talks about Blessing God:
Bless the Lord, O my soul; And all that is within me, bless His holy name!
Bless the Lord, O my soul, And forget not all His benefits:
One of my favorite songs sings about this: Matt Redman - 10,000 Reasons (Bless the Lord)
Other versions use the word praise instead of bless. When we bless God we are talking about all His
goodness, we recognize all that He is and all that He does for us! (A really big list!)
The next section of the verse is the word blessed is eulogeó. This Greek word means to speak well of.
Isn’t it wonderful when you overhear someone saying something good about you? Recognition of all your
hard work and efforts? Being blessed or thanked for something thoughtful you did. God speaks well of us!
Do you ever think about how you would be eulogized? Have you ever sat through a funeral and thought the
poor person having to do this service had little to go on and worse yet, you knew it? Talk about awkward!
I haven't had to give a eulogy, I can’t imagine finding the right words to fully encapsulate a person, to c
apture who they were over a lifetime in a short amount of time. In Christian circles we would all like to
hear the words, “Well done good and faithful servant” (Matthew 25:21). If you had to eulogize God what
would you say? If God gave your eulogy what would he say about you?
We receive a spiritual blessing from the Greek word spiritual pneumatikos to describe that which pertains
to the spirit or is influenced by the Holy Spirit. Another definition is
one who is filled with and governed by the Spirit of God I love this thought!

And blessing eulogia, you should recognize it as the word blessing form of eulogia and eulogētos that we
have studied above.
The term "eulogia" primarily denotes a blessing or a benefit. It is used in the New Testament to refer to
both the act of blessing and the content of the blessing itself. It can imply a spoken blessing, a gift, or a
benefit bestowed upon someone. The word carries connotations of praise and thanksgiving, often directed
towards God or as a divine favor bestowed upon individuals. This word blessing can also be translated as
bounty. My friend’s garden blessing this year was zucchini and she blessed me with several of them.
epouranios means
existing in heaven
things that take place in heaven
the heavenly regions
heaven itself, the abode of God and angels
the lower heavens, of the stars
the heavens, of the clouds
the heavenly temple or sanctuary
of heavenly origin or nature
In this wonderful passage we learn that Jesus came down from Heaven to bring us into the family and speak
well of us. Every benefit we could possibly have is available to us. Mind blowing yes?
Response Question: Look up the word blessing in the dictionary. Post what you have found.
