You will quickly find out I am a bible nerd. I love learning about the nuances of scripture and getting a fresh
understanding of something that my limited knowledge or English interpretation failed to grasp. I hope to k
eep a balance of nerd and practical so that you can stay with me! This week has so many great and powerful
verses. We open with the blessing found in Numbers 6:22-27.
NIV The Priestly Blessing
22 The Lord said to Moses, 23 “Tell Aaron and his sons, ‘This is how you are to bless the Israelites. Say to them:
24 “‘“The Lord bless you and keep you;
25 the Lord make his face shine on you and be gracious to you;
26 the Lord turn his face toward you and give you peace.”’ 27 “So they will put my name on the Israelites,
and I will bless them.”
There are several word changes with different translations that I’d like to share with you:
NKJ 24 “The Lord bless you and keep you;
25 The Lord make His face shine upon you, And be gracious to you;
26 The Lord [a]lift up His countenance upon you, And give you peace.” ’
NLT 24 ‘May the Lord bless you and protect you.
25 May the Lord smile on you and be gracious to you.
26 May the Lord show you his favor and give you his peace.’
If you are wondering about the word LORD (why is it capitalized, what's the difference between Lord and LORD
and God?) join me in the next study - names of God.
In this passage the word bless is used. Let’s take a minute to understand this word. The word bless in this verse
is barakh, barak or bᵊraḵ and is pronounced the same as past President Barack Obama. This is a Hebrew word
that means bless as in provision and kneel. In the Bible, "barak" is used to describe God's blessing upon
individuals, the blessings people bestow upon one another, and the blessings offered to God in worship.
This word is used 330 times in the bible most notably in creation where God provides His creation with
everything it needs to survive and flourish. To understand the kneeling aspect of this verse I picture someone
kneeling before a crowned person being knighted. They are pledging their allegiance to their ruler while the
ruler is commissioning them to service. In this case God is setting apart the Israelites as His people and He is
their God. This blessing was given just before Israel was going to be wandering in the desert for 40 years.
It would serve as a reminder that God would provide for and be with them during this time just as He did in
creation.
I would write this verse in cards commemorating baptisms, confirmations and the like. I am also going to start
praying this over my children and grandchildren in my prayers or when I am with them. As I made my grandson's
blanket I prayed this blessing as I made the stitches and hoped that he would keep this blanket like my children
have their blankets from their nana.

This week I wanted to share music video versions of the same song sung by Kari Jobe and Cody Carnes and Phil Wickham.
For your journal you could write about these bless themes from the word barak that we looked at this week:
Barak: a time when you were on your knees before God and a time when you saw God bless you with provision. I shared my journal entries for this week with you.
